It is the sole species in the Genus Carpentaria. In the same family as Hydrangea&#8217;s and closely related to Philadelphus (Mock Orange). It can grow to 10 feet tall and 6 feet wide in full sun. The leaves are a glossy blue-green on top and have a whitish color on the bottom. Flowering in late spring until mid-summer with sweet-smelling white flowers that are 3 inches across. They come in clusters with the flowers having 5-8 petals per flower and in the center a yellow ring of yellow stamens. The bark is flaky once the stems mature. A rare species that is endemic to sites in Fresno and Madera Counties. Well adapted to wildfires by reproducing from stump sprouts after naturally burning. Finding a natural seedling is rare. Seeds are tiny. Zones 8-9 Germination Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds on top of the medium and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover and keep temperatures around 65-75F.
