A native to the Four Corners area and west to Nevada. The common name is Rough Indian Paintbrush. It grows to only 8 inches tall and usually shorter than 8 inches. It will clump out a few feet wide in suitable growing conditions. The narrow green leaves are a wonderful backdrop for the bright red shoots. It reminds me of Christmas. Some of the stems are green, and some are purple. It should be grown in sandy soil with good drainage. Zones 4-8 Germination Rub seeds gently with sandpaper. Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds on top of the medium and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover and keep temperatures around 65-70F.
