Its native range is New Zealand North Island. This species belongs to a South Pacific lineage that diverged from all other fuchsias around 30 million years ago. It is endemic to New Zealand, where it is threatened. It is a coastal species that prefers to grow in sandy soils. It produces three types of flower forms, Male flowers, female flowers, and hermaphroditic flowers. It is in bloom from mid-summer until early fall. It can be used as a groundcover and will compete with other aggressive grasses in the area. It only reaches 6 inches tall but will spread out to 4 feet. It prefers to grow in the sun to light shade with average water needs. Zones 9-11 Germination Sow seeds on top of the medium and lightly tamp down. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover and keep temperatures around 65-75F.
