It is native to New Zealand. Common names include parrot's beak, lobster claw, kaka beak, or White Heron. It is one of two species in the Genus Clianthus. Both have red flowers making this one very rare being white. The name kaka comes from a parrot where the flowers look like the parrot's beak. It can grow to around 7 feet tall with spreading branches. The leaves are small leaflets on 6-inch stems. They bloom from mid-spring until late summer but may bloom twice or even all year long. You can train it to grow where you would like, up against a wall or up a pergola or trellis. It must be sheltered from any frost to survive. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with average water needs. It will attract birds, bees, and butterflies. Zones 8-9 Germination Rub each seed over coarse sandpaper or a nail file for a few seconds to scratch the hard seed coat so that water can enter easier. Soak the seeds in a small cup of warm water for about 24 hours. Sow seeds the thickness of the seeds on top of the medium and lightly cover with soil. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 14-60 days.
