Clematis recta is a herbaceous perennial in the Ranunculaceae family. Its native range is from Europe to the Caucasus. Common names include Upright Clematis, Upright Virgin's Bower, or Ground Virginsbower. This is an unusual species of Clematis, as this one in nature crawls along the ground. If given a few plants in the area to help support it, it will grow upright. It can grow to 8 feet tall and 3 feet wide. The 2-inch vanilla-scented flowers are in bloom from late spring until mid-summer. The seedheads are silky-like strings blowing in the air. Birds, bees, and butterflies are attracted to it. Zones 3-9 Germination Place your seeds and some soil in a ziplock bag. Moisten the mixture enough to stick together like a hamburger. Write the name of the seeds on the bag. Place the mixture in your refrigerator for 60 days. Seeds can then be sown into a well-drained, sandy compost and covered lightly with sand or grit. Place the seed tray in filtered bright light and keep moist until germination.
