Adopted as the State of Flower of Texas, it is one of the most commonly seen wildflower varieties along roadsides and uncultivated pastures throughout the state. Plants grow to a height between 12 and 24 inches, with blooms appearing in late spring and early summer. The flowers, which are a striking, deep blue and densely arranged on a spike with an ice-white tip, are an important food source for butterflies, bumble bees, honey bees, and other pollinators, and are the host plant for the gray hairstreak butterfly.
