Alpinia malaccensis is a herbaceous perennial in the Zingiberaceae family. Its native range is from Indonesia to Malaysia. Familiar names include Ornamental Ginger and Malacca Ginger. It grows naturally in rocky shaded outcrops at medium to low altitudes. It is used medicinally and is used as an oil to cook food. The entire plant has a fragrance to it and is emitted if bruised. It can grow to around 4 feet tall and wide with evergreen foliage. The leaves are 4-6 feet long and a few feet wide. The flowers have unique colors where the outside is white, and the throat is a deep orange with maroon streaks. It prefers to grow in the sun to part shade and light shade with average water needs. Zones 10-11 Germination Soak seeds for 24 hours. Sow seeds 1/2" deep, then tamp seeds into the soil and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 30-60 days.
