Bradford Pear, (Callery Pear), Pyrus calleryana, Tree Seeds Showy Ornamental Flowers, Fall Colors, Fast Growth, Shade Tree, Specimen Tree, Street Tree, Cold, Drought and Urban Tolerant, Adaptable, Bonsai Native to China and Taiwan, Callery Pear is a medium sized, ornamental tree that typically grows to 30 to 50 feet tall. With an upright form, pyramidal to columnar in youth, becoming oval and spreading with age, it blooms profusely early in spring with white, 3 inch, inflorescences for one week before the leaves emerge. Flowers are followed by small 1/2 inch, inedible, greenish-yellow fruits that are not particularly showy. Leaves are medium to dark green, very glossy, alternate, ovate to broad-ovate to orbicular, with a cordate to truncate base, acuminate tip and finely serrated margins. Leaves often holds its green summer color well into November or December, with fall colors variable in shades of purple, orange, yellow or red. Leaf: Alternate, simple, heart-shaped to ovate with a finely serrated margin, 2 to 3 inches in length, shiny green above, paler and dull below. Leaves turn attractive reddish-purple in fall. Flower: Large (2 to 4 inches across) clusters of showy white flowers (1/2 to 3/4 inch across) appearing in early spring, before or with the leaves. Often so dense the entire tree appears white. Fruit: Small (1/2 inch diameter), round, brown pome, very bitter. Twig: Glossy brown to reddish brown, medium in texture, spur shoots present; terminal buds are large (1/4 to 1/2 inch long), ovate, and covered in light brown wooly hairs. Bark: At first smooth with numerous lenticels, light brown to reddish brown, becoming grayish brown with shallow furrows and scaly ridges. Form: Typically quite upright and conical with very narrow branch angles. May reach 60 feet in height.
