Broadleaf Plantain Plantago major seeds (1000 seeds) Alaska USA wild harvested. No garden is complete without plantain. Often considered a weed Plantain is the most useful plant in the garden. From wikipedia: Plantain contains the phytochemicals allantoin, aucubin, ursolic acid, falvonoids and asperuloside. Plantain extract has been studied for its potential health effects. Plantain leaves were used commonly in folk medicine or skin poultices on wounds, sores, or insect stings. The root was used for fever and respiratory infections. Also a handy plant to have in the garden to treat insect bites. Take a leaf and mash onto the bite to alleviate itching. This is my primary care for mosquito bites I get while working in the garden. Young leaves can be eaten and older leaves can be added to stews. 100 grams of plantain contain approximately the same amount of beta-carotene as a large carrot.
