Cornus sericea ssp. sericea is a shrub in the Cornaceae family. A native of California. Some common names include Creek Dogwood, Red Osier Dogwood, and Red Twig Dogwood. Formerly known as Cornus stolonifera. It is moderately fast-growing to 10 feet tall and 8 feet wide. It is also a moderately long-lived shrub. It grows in a semi-upright form, with most growth during the spring and summer. The red bark is what makes it most noticeable and especially when the new growth comes out. The flowers are white and bloom in the spring. Leaves are medium green and deciduous. Fall foliage is when it shines the most with its amazing colorful foliage. The fruit range in color from white to gold to blue. It likes to grow in moist places. It will be visited by white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk, mountain goats, cottontail rabbits, snowshoe hares, numerous birds, black bears, and beavers. Zones 4-8 Germination Mix seeds and moistened soil together in a ziplock bag. Write the name on the bag. Place in the refrigerator for 60 days. Soak seeds for 12 hours.
