DESCRIPTION: MARGIE BROWN This is a strikingly beautiful scabrum with large, wide open white trumpets and dark red stripes. I has very strong scapes and is a good seed setter. This is our first introduction of this bulb to the public in 2018. This would be considered a medium-sized crinum when mature. The flowers open several at a time in sequence over a couple of days resulting in a very attractive bloom with great form. It will form new, offset bulbs on a regular basis once the bulb is mature, but slowly, producing maybe 1 new bulb every year. After growing it for over 11 years, we still only have about 20 bulbs, but there are enough that we can start to share it. We have observed up to 10 flowers on 22" tall scapes. The last time we moved the mother bulb, it was about 6" in diameter. We have recorded blooms from April-May and in September-October. These do very well here in zone 9. We grow over 1000 different crinum, including about 350 of our own hybrids,. BACKGROUND: MARGIE BROWN This is an inter-species cross, what might be called a clone, or variation (scabrum Rose City Schoolhouse #1, crossed with Rose City Schoolhouse #2). The plant has an interesting history, so this is what we have been told by Marcelle Sheppard. Note: from Marcelle Sheppard in 2011: The son of my friend, Ruth Dubuisson, found these two crinum at the old Rose City Schoolhouse. #1 was growing on one side of the building and #2 on the other side of the building. He got permission from the owners to dig them. #1 was the best, but I have lost it. I still have #2 and had it dug and potted up this spring. Ruth called me when they started to bloom, and I went to her home and showed her how to hybridize them using the pollen from each on the other one. When the seeds ripened, she brought them to me saying she did not want to fool with them. From those seeds I got the ones I named Ruth Dubuisson, Margie Brown, Rose City King and Rose City Star and two other pink keeled seedlings which multiply but do not set seeds. I still have at least one of these and possibly the other one. These came from an area which is near the Neches River, and it's my thought that the originals were crossed with the Americanum Robustum because they have dark scapes and dark keels which always go to the ends of the flower which the Scabrums do not. Dragon Lady came from this same location. It is a much smaller bulb and has a very red scape. I can't say what seeds or how many she got from which plant, as I didn't see them until after they were picked. I have not seen any other crinum which look like them in this area or otherwise. They will cross on the Macowanii or Mooreii varieties but will not take their pollen. They will cross on the Americanums or Americanum Robustums. GROWING INSTRUCTIONS: This does well here in northeast Florida, zone 9, but we do not think it would survive outside below zone 7. This is a very hardy and easy to grow bulb requiring no special care. It tolerates a wide range of soils (but prefers rich soil). In zone 7 or below we would recommend planting it in a pot and protecting it from freezing in the winter. You can just let the pot go dry and start watering again in the spring after it is placed outside again. Bulbs can survive nicely out of the ground for extended periods if allowed to dry. They prefer full sun, but partial shade is OK. They will also make excellent, container plants. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on a large, near blooming-size bulb at least 4 years old and about 2-3" in diameter which should bloom in 1 year. They don't like being disturbed, so it could take one year to "settle in." Bulbs will be freshly dug, shipped bare root and with leaves March-November. In the winter months the leaves may be absent. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom. Jumbo bulb – has bloomed at least 2 years, close to the maximum size for that particular plant (6+ years old) Large bulb - should bloom this year or next (3+ years old, close to, or at blooming size) Medium bulb - should bloom in 1-2 years (at least 2 years old) Small bulb - should bloom 2-4 years (current year or 1-2 year old offset) Seedling bulb - started from seed (usually in its first year of growth unless otherwise stated) PHOTOS/ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: These are pictures of our plants, so you know exactly what they look like and what you will receive.
