Ipomopsis rubra is a herbaceous biennial in the Polemoniaceae family. Its native range is in the central and eastern United States. Familiar names include Red Texas Star, Scarlet Gilia, Standing Cypress, and Texas Plume. It can be used in gardens as a hummingbird attractant that has a self-seeding nature. It can grow to 5 feet tall from a taproot. The leaves resemble the foliage of the cypress tree. It prefers to grow in full sun with average water needs and drought tolerance once established. Birds, bees, and butterflies will be attracted to it. Zones 3-9GerminationMix equal parts of potting soil, sand, vermiculite, and peat moss. Press seeds down into the media. Spread some long-fibered sphagnum moss on top of the potting media. Mist with a spray bottle. Cover the seed tray with clear plastic, and poke small holes in the plastic, maintaining a 64-75F. Uncover and mist as needed to keep the media moist. Place under a bright indirect light until germination.
