Lilium pardalinum is a bulbous perennial 9-species in the Liliaceae family. Its native range is from Oregon to Mexico and northern Baja California. Familiar names include Leopard Lily, Panther Lily, and Swamp Lily. It grows in damp areas similar to the Nepal Lily, except it also grows in wooded habitats. It is suitable for a wildlife garden and cut flowers. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. It can grow to around 6-8 feet tall from small bulbs clustered together on a rhizomatous stock. The leaves are lanceolate around 2-4 inches long and 1-2 inches wide. The flowers are red-orange with brown spots. They are down-facing around 3-5 inches in diameter with recurved petals. It is in bloom from July to August. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with average water needs. Zones 5-9 Germination Keep lily seeds frozen in a tightly sealed plastic bag until you are ready to sow. Sow seeds 1/2' deep into the soil and keep moist in a sunny location. Germination occurs in 2-9 months. You will have strong plants with mature stems in 3 years.
