Lilium regale is a 9-species/perennial herb in the Liliaceae family. Its native range is in southwest China. Familiar names include Regal lily, Royal lily, King's lily, and Christmas lily. This species has been given its Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society for its ease to grow in most climates except waterlogging. It has a bulb underground helping it to be long-lived. It can grow to 6 feet tall but is usually seen around 3-4 feet tall in gardens. The trumpet-shaped flowers are white, 5-6 inches across with a yellow throat and purple on the outside. The flowers are very showy and fragrant and in bloom at night. It is in bloom from late spring until early summer. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with average water needs. Zones 3-8 Germination Keep lily seeds frozen in a tightly sealed plastic bag until you are ready to sow. Sow seeds 1/2' deep into the soil and keep moist in a sunny location. Germination occurs in 3-4 weeks. You will have strong plants with mature stems in 3 years.
