Lobelia erinus is an annual in the Campanulaceae family. Its native range is in tropical and southern Africa. Familiar names include edging lobelia, garden lobelia, trailing lobelia, and Crystal Palace. A perfect plant for edging, hanging baskets, and also nice for window boxes. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. It is a low-growing plant growing to around a foot tall and 8-10 inches wide from a rootball. The leaves are basal and oval around 4 inches long and 2-3 inches wide. The flowers are blue to violet with five lobes. The inflorescence shoots up to around 5 inches above the plant with many flowers. They are in bloom from late spring until mid-summer. It prefers to grow in full sun with average water needs. Annual Germination Mix equal parts of potting soil, vermiculite, and peat moss. Press seeds down into the media. Spread some long-fibered sphagnum moss on top of the potting media. Mist with a spray bottle. Uncover and mist as needed to keep the media moist. Cover the seed tray with clear plastic to maintain a 64-75F. Place under a bright indirect light until germination.
