Used as a sponge, its actually a gourd! Fruit grows to 2' but requires a long growing season. In cooler climates, it needs to be started indoors and the use of hotbeds. Edible when young, these are delicious pan fried. Trellis them to help luffa fruit grow straight. 120 days. Scarify and soak seeds overnight prior to sowing. After danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up, sow seeds 1" deep, in loose, rich soil. If you are planting in rows, plant seeds 4-6" apart in rows 6' apart. Thin to 10-12'. If you are planting in hills, plant 3-4 seeds in a ring around the top of the hill, spacing your hills about 6' apart. In cooler climates, you'll have to start these indoors 3-4 weeks before last frost date. Plant with corn and pole beans, about 2 weeks after the corn is sown.
