Ruta graveolens is a herbaceous perennial in the Rutaceae family. Its native range is from the northern Balkan Peninsula to Krym. Familiar names include Common Rue, Garden Rue, Herb of Grace, and Herbygrass. It is used in culinary mostly in the past because it is bitter and can cause some gastric discomfort. It is used in a berbere spice mix in Ethiopian culinary and the fresh rue is dipped into coffee before drinking. The whole plant is used around the world in different culinary dishes. It was used for medicinal purposes but has now been discouraged to not use it for safety concerns. It can grow to around 2-3 feet tall and wide. The leaves are pinnate and blue-green. The leaves also have a strong smell to them when bruised and taste bitter. The flowers are in clusters a dull yellow when in bloom in the summer. It prefers to grow in full sun with little water needs. Zones 4-8 Germination Sow seeds on top of the soil and lightly cover letting light get to the seeds. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-60 days.
